WILLITON RBL TARGET SHOOTING CLUB IS COMMITTED TO THE CONSERVATION OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT AT ITS RANGE IN WILLITON AND WILL ENDEAVOUR TO MAINTAIN AND ENHANCE THE NATURAL FLORA & FAUNA WITHIN THE CLUB'S BOUNDARIES. DURING THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION WORKS ALL NECESSARY STEPS WILL BE TAKEN TO PROTECT OUR WILDLIFE AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
The Club’s range occupies approximately 50% of the old Williton Quarry that ceased production around 1920. The unused eastern end of the quarry is now natural, undisturbed woodland including a number of large mature trees. It is home to a variety of wildlife that happily co-exists with the Club and its activities. Amongst others there are nesting buzzard, tawny owls and woodpeckers. Rabbits and foxes are often seen and a wildlife survey carried out in 2017 found several species of bats using the area.
It is the Club’s policy to maintain and, wherever possible, to enhance the existing natural areas of the site. To that end the Club has engaged a professional wildlife conservation consultant. It is anticipated that the necessary disturbance to the existing range area will be short term and will be carried out at appropriate times of the year as guided by our consultants. We will carry out additional planting in disturbed areas and provide nesting boxes in the preserved woodland.
